These tutoring resources are highlighted here in an attempt to help students and families that inquire about tutoring options understand what resources could be available to them.

GKHS Peer Tutors: Current high school students who have excelled in specific subject areas (math and science) were recommended by current teachers to be peer tutors for the school year. If peer tutors are willing to tutor outside of school hours, these students would likely be the least expensive tutoring option for students in need of academic support. The going rate for peer tutors to tutor outside of school is typically about $15/hour.

GKHS Teachers: Teachers within each department (as long as they do not already teach the student in need of tutoring) might be willing to tutor within their subject area. For example, if the student is having difficulty in Mr. Pacini’s Algebra 2 class, families might consider reaching out to other math teachers to inquire as to whether or not they would be willing to tutor.

Northern Illinois University Students: In the past, Education students at NIU have offered tutoring to high school and middle school-aged students. If a student is struggling in a specific subject area, parent/guardian might consider contacting the Education department and/or the NIU department specific to the student’s academic area of difficulty to inquire about tutoring.

Current College Students in the Area: Families might know of current college students in the area who would make excellent tutors. Current college students can be relatively inexpensive tutoring options, but these individuals are often very busy with their own schoolwork.

Tutoring Centers: Although generally the most expensive option, tutoring centers are reliable and reputable.
