Text Box: GARNET INFORMATION

Average Hardness of Garnet: 6.5 - 8

Garnet is derived from the Latin word granatium. In ancient times, they were thought to have resembled pomegranate seeds, which were sacred. Only a very certain and surprisingly low amount of garnets are shaped well enough to be cut and used as gemstones. They can be used as abrasives, and blasting material. Garnet comes in a multitude of crazy colors, ranging all the way from black to lime green and red. Some come in a dirty yellowish color, and do not always have a significant value.

Garnet’s are used magically by some people who hold the gem sacred. They are used as charms in séances and gypsy works.

Garnet’s powers include healing, strength and protection and its often worn to relieve inflammations of the skin. It is also believed to regulate the heart and blood flow and aid in curing depression.

In earlier times, garnets were exchanged as gifts to demonstrate their affection for each other and to insure that they would meet again.

Garnets, like opals and diamonds, are used in jewelry. Garnet is one of the less valuable gems.
