Hancock county is named for John Hancock. John Hancock was the first signature on the Declaration of Independence.

The county was formed January 13,1825. The county seat is Carthage. Some towns in Hancock County are Adrian and Colusa. This county borders both Missouri and Iowa. It also borders the Mississippi River.
