Out of the one hundred and two counties in Illinois, Monroe County was named for a truly patriotic theme. It was one of the only six counties in Illinois to be named after a president (James Monroe).

Monroe County is home to the famous historical city of Waterloo. Located in Waterloo is the restored Bellefontaine Home.
It also contains the Illinois Caverns State Natural Area. Being located on the edge of Illinois, its western border is formed by the Mississippi River.
