Seabirds and Pollution

Seabirds are affected by pollution in many ways. The seabirds live in all different parts of the coasts. Most of the seabirds hunt for their food in the ocean. When there is an oil spill it affects their habitat.

Oil spills can happen in a lot of different ways. Oil spills happen when people make mistakes or are careless when dealing with oil. They can cause an oil tanker to leak into the ocean. A few more ways an oil spill can occur are equipment breaking down. If the equipment breaks down, the tanker may get stuck on shallow land or waters. When they start to drive it causes a hole to erupt in the tanker causing it to spew oil into the sea birds’ habitat affecting their lives.

Many seabirds die, including fish and other animals that live off or in the shores of the sea when an oil spill occurs. Birds die most commonly when they are drenched in the poisonous liquid and attempt to clean themselves off resulting in death from ingesting the harmful oil into their lungs and liver. Also birds can die from hypothermia because they can’t get out of the water with their feathers soaked in oil. When birds are kept in captivity the oil is flushed from their eyes, intestines and feathers.
